Three term course: Full time equivalent which can be completed in a year and then eligible to apply for BACP registration. Or you can attend over two years by taking a break between Module One or Module Two or Module Three. Over weekend days with a few 3/5 day modules in school holidays to gain a relevant diploma in counselling and psychology.
Why take this course?
The course is for people who are passionate about helping teenagers. The course qualifies delegates to work with 12 to 25 year olds. This means being able to work in Colleges too. IPPR statistic 2019 states that one third of students at College or University say they are lonely or depressed. The need is great! Secondly there are so few people in this country who hold an actual qualification in Counselling Teenagers, so we are sure that this Diploma will open many doors. The course will also enable you to offer PSHE to teenagers, run groups for teenagers and also for parents of teenagers
About the course
The course comprises a wealth of age appropriate therapeutic interventions, clinical skills practice, fascinating theoretical underpinnings from the latest research in psychology, sociology, neuroscience and medicine. In addition there is work-based learning and clinical supervision. As well as working one to one with troubled teenagers, the course will also equip delegates with evidence based psycho-education for teenagers. This includes all the vital knowledge needed to enable teenagers to successfully process painful life experiences and make informed decisions about key aspects of their lives e.g. use of social media, drugs, alcohol, gender and sexuality, self-harm, relationships with peers and parents, how to say no and look after themselves, the skill of happiness and what to do with their life. This will enable delegates to be able to teach psychology-informed PSHE lessons for teenagers
The course will also train delegates to be able to run specific focus mental health groups in a safe highly structured way. For many teenagers their mental health is compromised because they feel so alone in what they are going through in their lives. So these very safe and deeply moving groups offer teenagers the opportunity to meet others who are going through what they are going through. With clear confidentiality boundaries, specific focus groups may include: ‘The pain of being dumped and how to move on’ , ‘Living with regret about something you’ve done and how to resolve’, ‘Being a young carer’, “ Being in care’, ‘Following your dreams when a voice in your head says you won’t make it’, ‘Living with parents with marital and/or mental health problems’, ‘Having a parent in prison’ , ‘Uprooted: having experienced school/home moves.’ Teenagers sign up to attend with their privacy ensured and fully understanding Gillick competency.
Delegates will also be trained to run parenting groups. Commonly known as “ Tea and Talk groups ” ( typically one morning session a week in the school setting) parents of teenagers can come to talk about painful issues they are having with their teenager and learn key relationship skills on how to re- connect, heal attachment ruptures, lay down boundaries in a good and fair way, and enjoy a really healthy fulfilling relationship together. Parents find these groups extremely helpful and often report that they are a life-line.
Our Placement Officer will find all delegates a placement in an area of the UK of their choice or look to approve the delegate’s own choice of placement. Placements begin in Module Two . From March ( Module Two) you will need to start to accrue your 100 client hours. This should be at least two ( 45 mins to one hour) counselling sessions a week. We can provide you with a placement in your area or you can also work in your own school/ community. If the latter, we would need to approve your setting in terms of you being adequately supported to have a private room without interruptions and to ensure that your Senior Lead supports and respects your work. You would need to have no dual relationship with the teenagers you are seeing for formal counselling . This means no other role, e.g. teaching them. So you might like to offer your services to a school nearby instead. As placements do not start immediately at the beginning of Module Two ( in order to ensure confidence in working one to one as a counsellor you may not be able to complete the 100 client hours by end of July. Should this be the case, there will be a once monthly ( weekend day) training/supervision day over the following term/terms until you have completed your hours. . You will be obliged to attend these until you have completed all hours required to apply for BACP reg.
Duration and time commitment
The course has been carefully scheduled to run only over weekends and school holidays. It’s intensive but you can take a break between Module Two and Three. Starting from the beginning of Module Two
Personal therapy and supervision requirements.
From the beginning of Module Two, you will need to factor in 20 sessions of personal therapy with a UKCP psychotherapist or BACP accredited ( not registered) counsellor who can evidence undergoing their own in-depth personal psychotherapy for more than two years. There is some supervision covered on the course. This will need supplementing with some additional outside supervision. Group supervision is accepted and cost effective. You can count all hours attended.
