About the course

group therapy imageDesigned for qualified psychotherapists, therapists, and counsellors currently working as supervisors and those who would like to enter the field of supervision. The course aims to support the supervisor or emerging supervisor in relational and integrative theory and practice through lectures, seminars, case discussion and experiential workshops. The course embraces creative approaches and interventions using imagery as a communicative tool. It will provide fundamental professional principles of supervision practice integrating theoretical perspectives with creative and relational approaches.


Course content

The Principles and Practice of Relational and Integrative Supervision including:

  • Supervision - A working alliance and key components of an effective supervisor-supervisee relationship
  • The significance of imaginative enquiry in supervision
  • Creative approaches to supervision using arts and imagery
  • Roles and responsibilities with reference to support, education, management and clinical accountability
  • Relational processes in supervision including transference and counter transference dynamics and parallel processes
  • Integration – facilitating the emerging styles of the supervisee
  • Developing philosophy, approach and personal style of supervisee
  • Assessment and monitoring, including how to investigate, evaluate and report on progress in psychotherapy and supervision (specific to work with children teenagers and adults)
  • Safeguarding and Child Protection (up to date legislation, interventions and the court)
  • Ethics and professional and ethical dilemmas in supervision; from philosophy to policy and procedure
  • Supervision of groups



Any counsellor, therapist, psychotherapist or psychologist who has completed 3 years of post-qualifying clinical work and who has accrued substantial hours as a supervisor.

Applicants are also welcomed from graduates with 3 years post qualifying clinical work, who have not yet worked as a supervisor. However the course assessments cannot be undertaken until substantial hours as a supervisor have been accrued.

Assessments will include: a case presentation, an essay and self-assessment through reflective learning journals.

Jocelyne Quennell
Former Principal of IATE and Director of MA Integrative Arts Psychotherapy. Worked for over twenty years educating and supervising arts therapists and psychotherapists (all ages in independent, statutory, voluntary and charity sectors). She has been committed to psychotherapy regulation for many years and has contributed to the development of quality and standards in the UKCP. She has helped to pioneer training overseas and continues to educate on the therapeutic application of the arts in creative and relational approaches to wellbeing, psychotherapy and supervision.

Lizzie Smosarski
UKCP registered Integrative Arts Psychotherapist and UKCP registered Child, Adolescent and Family Psychotherapist, working for many years as a supervisor for different organisations e.g.: Sesame, The Place 2 Be, Kids Company, Terapia, The Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy Education and IATE. Lizzie has a wealth of knowledge, experience and expertise to draw upon in training supervisors using a creative and relational approach. Lizzie and Jocelyne have also worked together for many years, pioneering multi-disciplinary approaches to wellbeing practice for children, young people, families and organisations.
