If you wish to apply for any course you need to attend a Taster Day / Application Day (or a Taster Evening). Upcoming dates for these events are listed below.
What is a Taster Day / Application Day (or Taster Evening)?
A Taster Day / Application Day, or a Taster Evening, provides an essential part of the application process and a crucial introduction to all courses at The Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education (IATE). They form an integral part of the interview process.
The Taster Day / Application Day, or a Taster Evening, is tailor-made in such a way to allow for tutors to begin to build a relationship with you and for you to start the process of using the Arts as a Psychotherapeutic tool, across all levels.
To begin with there is an audio- visual presentation, introducing you to the clinical techniques, theory and practice covered on the courses at the Institute and illustrated by moving and emotionally powerful case studies. This is followed by participation in 2 integrative Arts workshops utilising the 7 different art forms we study. The day is concluded by group interviews at the end of the day which will explore psychological themes and invite personal reflection on life events

Do I need to complete an Application Form?
Everyone wishing to apply for a course will need to have completed and submitted an IATE Application Form prior to the group interview (there isn't much time during the day so completion of the form beforehand is recommended). Please ensure to affix a passport photo. You can download an application form from the link below, there is also one in the Taster Day / Application Day information pack we send you.
Please hand your completed application form to the registration staff at the start of the Taster Day / Evening.
If my application/interview is unsuccessful, will I receive feedback?
Unfortunately, as an educational non-profit making company, IATE does not have the resources to offer personalised feedback.
On some occasions, IATE may request that applicants do more personal work (eg: attending personal therapy) for a specific period before returning and reapplying.
What is your refund and cancellation policy?
The Taster Day / Application Day and Taster Evening is non-refundable (unless the day is already full or cancelled). If you are unable to make your chosen date, you can transfer your Taster Day / Application Day once within the academic year. Please get in touch with the office, where someone will be happy to assist.
Duty of care to applicants and students:
We ask you to note that therapy training and interviews for therapy training can be experienced at times as emotionally challenging. Please be aware of this before applying. Unless trainees are truly emotionally available to their own traumatised child and have sufficiently addressed painful life experience leading to personal awareness, insight and robustness, it is not possible to be truly emotionally available to the distress of others. When we see potential in a trainee but feel they need to undergo more personal work, we ask for a year’s psychotherapy and to re-apply. All registered psychotherapists must undergo extensive personal psychotherapy as part of their training, We have limited places. Please be aware on applying that, due to limited resources, we regret that IATE is unable to offer feedback from applications that have been unsuccessful.
One of our duties of care to applicants and students is to ensure adequate provision is made so that psychological wellbeing is not put at risk. In light of this, occasionally an applicant or current student may be asked to provide appropriate written assurance from a medical or mental health professional. This may be before attending an interview, before attending a training or during a training itself.
As part of the duty of care and assessment process we regularly ask some applicants to attend a second interview (free of charge).
This can be due to one or more of the following reasons:
a) to ensure that the training is not going to be too stressful for an applicant
b) to ensure the training does not trigger a harmful reaction to an existing or past condition
c) as a further opportunity to extend the application process when it is felt that we need to get a better sense of the applicant following the taster day (this is in no way a criticism)
d) to ensure that the training is going to meet the applicant’s professional needs.
Applicants should not be alarmed if they are asked to attend to a second interview as this is standard practice within our organisation.
